The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world’s leading user laboratories. With its 1300 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle physics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The Laboratory for Nuclear Materials (see http://lwv.web.psi.ch) of the Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department (NES) is a centre for multi-disciplinary research on nuclear materials and has an international reputation in the field of nuclear fuel behaviour, safety of pressure boundary systems and high temperature materials. It conducts experiments on inactive and radioactive samples and models the materials behaviour. We are looking for a
PhD student
Analysis of the inhomogeneous corrosion product deposition on fuel pin surfaces
Your task

* Characterise the local crystallography, composition and structure of the corrosion product deposition layer (CRUD) on Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fuel rods by EPMA, µ-XAS, µ-XRD and SEM
* Evaluate the experimental findings based on plant water chemistry data, additional available fuel pin information and thermodynamical GEM-calculations
* Carry-out a PhD-thesis on the above mentioned topics, including publication of the results in peer reviewed journals

Your profile

* Diploma or master degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Physic
* Preferably, good knowledge of surface analysis methods and modern X-Ray spectroscopy methods
* Active interest in experimental work and in an interdisciplinary team spirit
* Communication skills preferably both in German and English

We seek for a highly motivated individual who enjoys working in a team of scientists with different backgrounds.

You will work at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, while being registered as a PhD student at the ETH-Zürich. You will be supervised by Dr. C. Degueldre at the Laboratory for Material Behaviour in PSI.
