This PhD project is part of the Security Arena in Lindholmen Science Park, Gothenburg. The project is focusing on various aspects of intrusion detection systems and their role in emergency management.

Security Arena Lindholmen is a national arena for research and method development regarding societal safety and security . Aspects of secure and efficient communication are in primary focus since this is a vital requirement for achieving shared situation awareness for all actors in the crisis management system. In addition, crisis management methodologies, user-adapted information collection and metrication aspects are studied. The project is supported by the Swedish Emergency Management Agency (SEMA/Krisberedskapsmyndigheten) and is conducted in close collaboration with industry and governmental organizations to secure optimal direction and facilitate that results are efficiently disseminated to relevant stakeholders.

PhD project
The PhD project will address aspects of intrusion detection, supervision and monitoring together with their application to emergency and crisis management. A fundamental issue in this context is that of logging, i.e. how to collect data in such a way that ade¬quate conclusions can be made. One of the problems is that the amount of raw data is very high and has to be reduced in such a way that the rele¬vant information is not discarded. Data mining approaches to this will most probably be fruitful. Other issues of interest include e.g. correlating data or alerts, decision making and visualization.

Suitable background
A suitable background for the applicant is Master of Science in computer science or com¬puter engineering, with focus on information technology and security. We expect the applicant to have an interdisci¬plinary research interest and welcome experience from working in heterogeneous groups. Knowledge of statistical and mathematical modelling and evaluation is a merit. Due to expected interaction with other member organizations, it is a clear advantage if the applicant is fluent in Swedish.

Details about employment
PhD student positions are limited to five years and normally include 20 per cent departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers’ general agreement for PhD student positions.

The project will start April 15, 2008.
