In the meanwhile, ParaQuad NSW would like to congratulate the successful scholarship applicants for 2007. Fifteen Golden Stave scholarships were awarded for 2007: to support people with SCI at school, university and sporting endeavours such as wheelchair basketball and archery. And a big thanks to the music industry’s Golden Stave Foundation, for making these scholarships possible.

Golden Stave Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $5,000 per year. The Golden Stave Scholarships are designed to ease financial burden and provide funding for education and/or sport & recreation activities for individuals with an acquired spinal cord injury, between the ages of 15-30, residing in NSW.

The Golden Stave Foundation History
The music and entertainment industries’ longstanding support has made ParaQuad’s Golden Stave scholarships possible.

The term ‘music & entertainment industries’ covers record and publishing companies, radio and TV stations, promoters, agents, management companies, artists, writers plus a wide range of associated service industries such as printers and publicists.

For about 30 years, the Foundation has held a number of fundraising functions, the most ‘infamous’ being the Golden Stave lunch, first held in 1978. Last year, the lunch raised $750,000 which was distributed to the many charities which the Golden Stave Foundation supports to contribute towards the relief of poverty, destitution, sickness, helplessness and misfortune amongst persons and particularly children suffering from physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities.

These charities include organisations such as:

* Aunties and Uncles
* Australian Children’s Music Foundation
* Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
* Handicapped Children’s Centre New South Wales
* Humpty Dumpty Foundation Association
* Inala
* Inspire Foundation
* Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
* Lifestart Co-Op
* Muscular Dystrophy Association of New South Wales
* Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia
* Redkite
* Royal Far West School
* The Shepherd Centre
* Sony Music Foundation
* The Spastic Centre - Techno Tots
* Support Act Limited
* Surf Life Saving School
* St. Gabriel’s School for Hearing Impaired Children, and of course
* ParaQuad NSW – the Paraplegic & Quadriplegic Association of NSW.

As the largest annual charity luncheon in Australia, the Golden Stave is an event of which the music and entertainment industries can be justifiably proud.

Every year the annual Golden Stave Lunch has grown in scale, scope and notoriety to the point where it has become an integral part of the Music and Entertainment Industry’s calendar. The spirit of the Golden Stave Luncheon is unique - a spontaneous Industry ‘roast’ which epitomises the rough diamond quality of the Australian Music and Entertainment Industries and the people who make it work. Apart from its crucial role as a major fundraiser for child-orientated charities, the Golden Stave provides a pressure valve for a group of people whose work is often fraught with long hours and impossible deadlines.

Since that first luncheon, some of the projects that the Golden Stave has supported over the years include:

* Desperately needed equipment for ParaQuad’s Ferguson Lodge, which provides specialised nursing and medical care as well as accommodation for 42 paraplegics and quadriplegics
* Two fully equipped 22-seater buses
* A music room for Ferguson Lodge dedicated to the memory of the late Jack Argent
* The ParaQuad Berala Project which is a uniquely designed housing development incorporating six specially-equipped units for people who use wheelchairs
* The setting up of the Golden Stave Scholarship for ParaQuad NSW, and the list goes on.

The Golden Stave Foundation has 12 Directors:

* Graham Fear – Chairman
* Maryanne Knight - General Manager
* Ron Welsh - Company Secretary
* Michael Chugg AM
* Alex Coroneos
* Paul Donkin
* Brian Harris
* Peter Hebbes
* Mick Mazzone
* Gill Robert
* Wayne Rowley
* Larry Warren

This Company oversees the entire Golden Stave ‘workings’ plus the charitable donation process each year. The Directors table their recommendations for charity allocation to the Golden Stave Foundation Trustees and, if there are no problems, the Trustees then place their ’stamp of approval’ on the recommendations tabled.
