UCL and Brunel University PhD Student Position
December 30, 2007
Vacancy Reference: CASE
Closing Date: 07 January 2008
Position: CASE PhD Studentship in recovery of data from damaged memory devices
UCL and Brunel University
The Photonic Materials group has a vacancy for a PhD student on a project looking at methods to recover data from damaged electronic memory devices (SIM cards, EEPROMS and other such devices). The project is co-sponsored by EPSRC and the Forensic Science Service under the CASE scheme, and the work is in collaboration with UCL and Brunel University.
The project is concerned with the recovery, for forensic purposes, of data from memory devices that have been damaged by fire, mechanical shock or other means, where the standard electronic interface for reading out data has been disabled. We are interested in determining the maximum damage that can be sustained before effective repair or electrical probing is impossible. We also aim to develop techniques for the recovery of data from partial, or highly damaged, devices, with a particular emphasis on scanning probe techniques such as Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy.
The group has a number of active research contracts, funded both by EPSRC and the European Commission, and the successful PhD applicant will have access to a wide range of facilities, including materials processing and fabrication and comprehensive electronics and laser laboratories.
The PhD positions would suit candidates with undergraduate degrees in Electronic Engineering or Physics, preferably with some experience of semiconductor devices. Candidates will be expected to have at least an upper second class degree. Applicants must qualify for UK/EU fee status.
All studentships are for three years and cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a stipend at the level of approx 14,000 per annum, increasing with inflation.
Applications should be made using the UCL postgraduate study application form, obtainable at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application-admission, or from PhD enquiries, +44(0) 20 7679 7307. Candidates should indicate on the application form under Programme of Study that they are applying for the studentship above. Candidates should send two complete sets of the application form (including references), one to Admissions, UCL as per application form and the other for attention Dr Tony Kenyon.
The department at UCL is very highly rated for its research (5A), and students will be joining an active group with an international reputation.
Further details of the groups work can be found at: http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/~tkenyon/OMED.html
Technical questions about the positions and the groups research should be directed to Dr Tony Kenyon (t.kenyon@ee.ucl.ac.uk)
