Postgraduate studies
Entry Requirements
Normal entry requirements for both the MSc and MRes is a good honours degree. The provision of references is crucial to the selection procedure. Applicants whose first degree has not been taught in English and who are not native English speakers must have a TOEFL score of at least 570 (paper-based) or 230 (computer-based) or an ELTS score of 6.5.

If you are interested in studying on our MRes or MSc programmes please contact Dr Clare McManus-Czubinska, CEES Postgraduate Taught Course Coordinator with an initial expression of interest.
The application procedures for both the MSc and MRes programmes are detailed on the Graduate School website. Applications forms may also be downloaded from this website.
Additionally, MRes applicants wishing to study for a PhD upon completion of the MRes must follow the ESRC’s ‘1 + 3′ application procedures which among other things requires the submission of a PhD proposal. MRes ‘1+3′ applicants are required to contact the Department and identify an intended supervisor before filling in an application form. At this stage you will be asked to provide a research proposal and outline and will be offered additional guidance in completing and submitting your application. Initial expressions of interest should be conveyed to the Department by Monday 14 January 2008.

Application forms for the MRes in Russian, Central and East European Studies can be obtained from the ESRC website. These forms should be completed in close consultation with the Department of Central and East European Studies.

MSc Programme
CRCEES and the Department of Central and East European Studies invites applications for two MSc scholarships (UK/EU tuition fees plus stipend of £12,300) on its one-year masters programme, the MSc in Russian, Central and East European Studies. For MSc scholarships commencing in September 2008, the expected deadline for applications is 1st February. For more information please contact Dr Clare McManus (Postgraduate Taught Convener).
Furthermore, two MSc scholarships will be available annually in 2009 and 2010.
Part-time students are sometimes funded by their employer. Students who pay their own fees may be eligible for Career Development Loans which are available from major banks.
MRes/PhD
The programmes of postgraduate research training (MRes) and PhD supervision offered by CEES have recognition from the ESRC under its 2+3, 1+3 and +3 modes of postgraduate funding (see the ESRC website for details). Furthermore, the Department has also been awarded ESRC Collaborative (CASE) Study recognition. This allows prospective research students to apply for ESRC awards to carry out projects in the social sciences in collaboration with companies/business/ non-governmental organisations. The AHRC has also recognised our programme of postgraduate training. This means that our students can apply to the AHRC for scholarships for research and research training (see the AHRC website).
Candidates intending to apply for funding should contact the Department’s Postgraduate Research Convener in the early Autumn of the academic year prior to intended entry, with a view to sending a preliminary expression of interest (including 1,000 word research proposal) by the following January.

* Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland (expected deadline: 14 May 2008)

New from session 2008-09 - the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) scholarship.
The scholarship consists of one-year funding for the taught postgraduate masters research methods course the MRes in Russian, Central and East European, followed by four years of PhD funding.
During the first year, the MRes year, the GTA will shadow the existing GTA’s teaching. For the subsequent four years of PhD study the new GTA will be expected to then take over all teaching duties as determined by the Head of Department. The deadline for applications is Friday 22nd February, 2008.
