2008-2009 Bright Futures Scholarship for Pima Community College

Bright Futures Scholarship Criteria
Ten $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to female students who have demonstrated determination in overcoming an obstacle and who plan to enroll at Pima Community College in the Fall of 2008. $1,000 of the scholarship will be applied to the Fall 2008 semester. The remaining $1,000 will be applied to the Spring 2009 semester upon successful completion of the Fall 2008 semester.
Eligibility
* Applicant must be a high school senior, a recent high school graduate or GED recipient with plans to enter Pima Community
College as a first time freshman or a returning Pima Community College student.
* Applicant must demonstrate a strong commitment to pursuing an associate’s degree from Pima Community College or plan to transfer to a four-year institution or technical school from Pima Community College.
* Applicant must demonstrate integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.
* Applicant must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 1.7.
* Extra consideration will be given to applicants who meet any of the following criteria (applicants are not required to meet these
criteria to apply):
* Applicants who have previously received a Bright Futures Scholarship and successfully completed one full year at Pima Community College and plan to enroll in a second full year.
* Applicants who are currently enrolled in YWCA’s Bright Futures Program or who have successfully completed the program in the past.
* Applicants who have participated in other YWCA programs such as TECHgyrls, the Racial Justice Youth Program, Girls with Tools, etc.
* Applicants who have demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles while remaining actively involved in their school or community through volunteer work, paid work, sports/recreational activities, school clubs, band, drama, etc.
* Applicants that demonstrate financial need.
Application
* Applicants must complete the Bright Futures Scholarship Application
* Applicants must write a personal statement on the following topic:
o Please describe in 200-500 words a significant obstacle that you have overcome and how this experience has impacted your life and your decision to pursue a college education. Please be sure to comment on the difference receiving a scholarship would mean in your life.
* Applicants must obtain a letter of recommendation from one adult. Recommendations can be written by a school guidance
counselor, teacher, principal, friend, relative, pastor, or someone else who can attest to the applicant’s character.

Deadline
Applications must be submitted online, faxed, or postmarked by Monday, February 25, 2008 (see Contact Information below).
You will receive a confirmation via email or a postcard once your application has been received.
Notification
Winners will be notified by phone 4-6 weeks after the scholarship deadline. The names of the winners and their schools will
be posted on YWCA’s website by April 10, 2008.
Other Requirements
In order to receive the Bright Futures Scholarship, student must show proof of enrollment in a minimum of 9-units at Pima
Community College.Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 at the end of the fall semester in order to
receive the remainder of the scholarship for the spring semester. Scholarship recipients must participate in one YWCA event each semester and maintain contact with a mentor chosen by the YWCA.
