Ph.D. Positions NTNU, Norway
December 18, 2007
Ph.D. positions (1 to 3 positions) in “Sensor Network Aided Cognitive Radio” at the
Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, NTNU, Norway - IME-077-2007.
Ph.D. Research fellowships (1 – 3 positions) are offered within the area of “Sensor Network
Aided Cognitive Radio” at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications
(http://www.iet.ntnu.no/en, within the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and
Electrical Engineering, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
One of the Ph.D. scholarships is financed by EU FP7 under the project SENDORA (SEnsor
Network for Dynamic and cOgnitive Radio Access), while the other two scholarships possibly
will be funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) under the project CROPS2. The
latter project is currently under evaluation in the NFR, and the two Ph.D. students related to
CROPS2 will only be hired if the project receives funding.
The two projects are complementary and synergetic research projects with both academic and
industrial partners from Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain and Italy. The goal of both
projects is to improve the usage of radio spectrum by means of cognitive radio. In cognitive
radio secondary (unlicensed) users are allowed to transmit as long as they do not degrade
primary (licensed) users’ communication. This leads to coexistence between primary and
secondary use of radio frequencies. A dedicated sensor network can aid the cognitive radio by
sensing the radio spectrum to find the frequencies and power levels that causes the least
interference with other users in a certain area. The projects will have the emphasis on
addressing basic research aspects for such methods, and in addition SENDORA will also
produce a demonstrator.
The focus of the Ph.D. positions will be on developing strategies for interference
management, access schemes, transmission and detection methods and resource allocation for
sensor network aided and ad-hoc network based cognitive radio systems. The aim is to
maximize throughput and minimize interference for both primary and secondary users. In
SENDORA this includes the development of an interference model based on different
scenarios and systems requirements and a description of the radio propagation in the
environment the system should operate in. For the two Ph.D. students in CROPS2, the
emphasis will be on development of efficient distributed algorithms for detection of
electromagnetic signals at low signal to noise ratios, and cooperative methods for multi-user
transmission for different network topologies with different demands on delay and data rate.
The doctoral candidates will be associated with, and have a main supervisor from the
Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at NTNU. The candidates will work in a
strong and active scientific environment, and the project will incorporate collaboration with
several partners in Norway and abroad, as well as active international publication of research
results.
We seek highly motivated individuals holding a master’s degree in electrical engineering,
communication technology, or other relevant disciplines. The candidate should have
competence in statistical signal processing, communication theory, and digital
communication. The candidates must be formally qualified for Ph.D. studies at NTNU.
General information about doctoral studies at NTNU can be found at
http://www.ime.ntnu.no/english/research/phd. It is demanded that the scholarship holders
apply for, and are accepted for, the Ph.D. study programme at NTNU as soon as possible after
hiring.
Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Associate Professor Torbjörn Ekman (e-mail:
torbjorn.ekman@iet.ntnu.no, tel. +4773594604) or Professor Geir E. Øien (e-mail:
oien@iet.ntnu.no; phone: +4793455408) for further information.
Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent on
specified work. This work is primarily linked to teaching and is usually divided so that a
relatively large part is done in the first half of the period of the appointment.
The position is remunerated according to wage levels 43 to 58 on the Norwegian State salary
scale, with gross salary from NOK 325.600 to NOK 423.800 a year (1 NOK ~ 0.125 EUR),
of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with relevant parts of
“Supplementary guidelines for employment as research fellow at NTNU”.
The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants must agree to
participate in organised doctoral study programmes within the period of the appointment. The
successful applicants must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract
will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award
holders.
The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest
possible extent. It is therefore a major political objective to achieve a balance of gender and to
recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants are encouraged to apply for this
post.
NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are
encouraged to apply.
The application must contain information about education, examinations and previous
experience. Certified copies of certificates and documents must be attached.
Three copies of publications and any other work which the applicant wishes to be taken into
account should also be enclosed. Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to specify the
input of the applicant in a joint work, a short summary should be attached outlining the
applicant’s input.
Applications are to be sent to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty
of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Gamle Fysikk, Sem
Sælands vei 5, NO-7491 Trondheim, Norway. The application deadline is 31.12.2007. The
file number for the positions, Jnr. IME-077-2007, is to be clearly stated on the application.
