New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarships

Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarships (NZIUFS) are a significant educational opportunity.

The Scholarships provide financial support by way of international tuition fees for eligible students from designated localities undertaking undergraduate study at New Zealand institutions. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.
New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) - Open

(formerly known as NZAID Postgraduate Scholarships)
2007 New Zealand Development Scholarships (Open):

* are only available to students from selected developing countries,
* are for postgraduate study in specific areas of developmental relevance to the student’s home country,*
* cover tuition fees, return economy airfare, a basic living allowance, arrival costs, and medical insurance. Limited assistance may be available for dependents in New Zealand for students with courses of study 18 months or longer.
* are offered by the New Zealand Government, through NZAID.

*Please note applicants from the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia may apply to study at undergraduate level.
To be Eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must:

* be a citizen of an eligible country (see below),
* have several years work experience in a field relevant to their proposed study,
* be proposing to study in an area of developmental relevance specifically targetted by NZAID for their home country,
* have applied for admission to the University of Canterbury. (This application can be submitted at the same time with their Scholarship application.)
* have submitted a complete NZDS application form for study in 2008 to reach the University of Canterbury before 1 May 2008. (NB. for applicants from Pacific Island countries the deadline is 1 June 2008 .

Purpose of the Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to progress the social and economic development of selected countries. Therefore, applicants need to demonstrate their commitment to the social and/or economic development of their home country as well as describe the direct benefit to their home country of the proposed study. Scholarship recipients are required to return to their home country for at least two years on completion of the scholarship.
Eligible Countries

Citizens from the following countries are eligible to apply for the New Zealand Development Scholarship (Open):

* Pacific Islands: Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

* Africa:** Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

* Asia: Cambodia, China (Ministry of Education nominees), Indonesia, Lao PDR, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam.

* Latin America: Argentina*, Bolivia, Brazil*, Chile*, Ecuador, El Salvador*, Guatemala*, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay*, Uruguay*.

* applicants from these countries must apply directly to the relevant New Zealand Diplomatic Mission in Latin America.

**Preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged communities.

Disclaimer: The NZDS scheme, including country eligibility, is subject to ongoing review and amendment. Applicants should check their eligibility prior to lodging an application. NZAID reserves the right to decline any application, before it has been fully processed, in the event of country eligibility changes.

Applicants living, studying or working outside their home country will not normally be considered eligible for the NZDS scholarship.
Country Criteria

Scholarships are offered in specific areas of developmental relevance for different countries. Therefore, before applying please check that your proposed programme of study is one that is targetted by NZAID for your home country.

Latin America
Priority areas are: promotion of sustainable rural livelihoods and good governance.

South Asia
Priority areas are: sustainable rural livelihoods, basic education, primary health, governance, trade and development, and conflict prevention and reconstruction.

Africa
Priority areas are: governance, education, health (including HIV/AIDS), sustainable rural livelihoods, and small and micro enterprise (SME) development.

Pacific Islands
Priority areas are: education (basic education), health (especially primary health care), governance, sustainable rural livelihoods.

Applications have closed for study in 2007

Complete NZDS applications for 2008 must be received by the University no later than 15 May 2007 to be considered for the scholarship. (NB. for Pacific Island applicants the deadline is 17 July 2007.)

The NZDS (Open) application form must be accompanied by a completed admission application form, unless you have already applied for admission to the University of Canterbury.

If you are unable to access the electronic version of either form please write to the International Office, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch, New Zealand, to request a hard-copy.

Incomplete applications will not be considered for the scholarship, therefore, please ensure all required documentation is included before submitting your application.
Scholarship Result

Applicants should expect to be notified by the University of the outcome of their NZDS scholarship application in October.
