Guest Scholarship Programme (Sweden)

The Guest Scholarship Programme is aimed at those wishing to come to Sweden as guest students for a specific period of time. The programme is not aimed at individuals intending to settle permanently in Sweden.

The scholarships are intended for students at advanced university level, for part of PhD or post-doc studies at any university or university college in Sweden, or for participation in a master’s level programme. There are no scholarships available for undergraduate studies. The scholarships cannot be granted for a complete course of study leading to a PhD degree.

Scholarships are granted for studies within all subject areas. However, there are no scholarships available for learning basic Swedish.

Prior to application the applicant must establish contact with a Swedish university department willing to accept the applicant for the proposed studies. This contact may also be made through the professor or academic adviser at the applicant’s home institution of research or learning. Awards are not granted for studies that can be pursued in the applicant’s home country or any other country outside Sweden.

The maximum scholarship period is three academic years but scholarships are usually granted for one academic year (nine months) at a time. Scholarships can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration.

At present the scholarship amounts to SEK 8,000 per month for graduate and research students and SEK 12,000 for holders of a PhD degree. Each scholarship is designed to cover the living expenses of one person only. There are no grants of any kind for family members. Scholarship holders from developing countries can apply for a partial travel grant. The scholarship holder is insured by the Swedish Institute against illness and accidents during the scholarship period.

The scholarships are intended for students in higher education and for researchers.

Citizens from any part of the world, except from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden), may apply.

Students already studying in Sweden are eligible to apply provided that they are not permanent residents, nor holders of a Swedish work permit, and they have not been living in Sweden for more than two years when the scholarship is due to begin. This is not applicable to EU citizens.

The Swedish Institute also administers a regional scholarship programme, the Visby Programme (Belarus, Moscow and Northwest Russia, and Ukraine), and applicants from these regions should submit their application within the Visby Progamme only.

A good knowledge of Swedish and/or English is required.

There is no age limit and there are no national quotas.
