Hannover Biomedical Research School, as part of Hannover Medical School (MHH), invite applications for the above PhD studentships, to commence in October 2008
The three-year study programs, taught in English, are aimed at post-graduates in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine as well as those from Life Science fields. The PhD program "Regenerative Sciences" is also open to students from the various disciplines of Materials Sciences. As well as working on a 3-year research project, students also attend seminars, lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, symposiums and summer schools. Successful candidates will finish with a PhD, alternatively Dr. rer. nat. Scholarships are to be fully funded by the DFG (Excellence Initiative), MHH, partner institutes and their respective departments
We are looking for highly-motivated candidates who have an active interest in one of the fields associated with one or more of the programs on offer. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required. With nearly two thirds of our students coming from outside Germany, international applicants are welcome. PhD Regenerative Sciences: Research and teaching concentrates on Developmental Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Biology of Ageing and Degeneration, Growth Factors and Other Regenerative Agents, Cell Therapy, Tissue Engineering including Materials Sciences, and Ethical as well as Regulatory Implications. I am lecturer of animal breeding and genetics in Hawassa University , Ethiopia with MSc degree in animal genetics and breeding. I have professional interest towards effective and sustainable utilization of farm animal genetic resources for food and agriculture production in a sustainable end eco-friendly way. More importantly, these indigenous breeds of livestock form a broad array of organic agriculture, which qualifies a sustainable farming system typology especially in less privileged nations. To this effect I have developed a strong interest for further study opportunities leading towards PhD in fields related to animal breeding and genetics and animal biotechnology. My name is Dr. Fufa Abunna Kurra. This is my application for the graduate opportunity of the Doctoral Programmes Scholarship you have announced.
I have got a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in July 1999 and degree of Masters of Science (MSc) in Tropical Veterinary Epidemiology in August 2006 from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Currently, I am delivering lectures of Animal Physiology to both Veterinary Medicine and Biology students of the University at an Assistant Professor position.
My main motivation for applying to the Doctoral Programmes in the animal physiology is my past unfulfilled passion to advance in Veterinary Physiology. Veterinary Physiology during the undergraduate training in my country is not up to the standard due to lack of qualified teachers in the only University that is offering. In fact I had an opportunity to apply Veterinary Physiology research during my DVM thesis dissertation on the physiological parameters of ovine hematology and I have published these findings on a recognized international journal. My preliminary study could have been taken to the next molecular characterization, which needs more knowledge and sophisticated laboratory analysis. But lack of technical expertise and facilities hampered to fulfill my passion in Veterinary Physiology and due to this problem I did my MSc research on Veterinary Epidemiology.
Therefore, I have strong interest to upgrade my education in the field of Veterinary Physiology by approaching some novel methods and protocols for Veterinary Physiology. As to my career objective, I have a dream that I become an asset for my poor country in improving livestock production and productivity via creating good environment for breeding and genetics research, understanding the physiological and patho-pysiological parameters of animals and its application. This could help me to contribute to the development process of making my country’s poverty history and filling the gap of skilled man power in the area of Veterinary Physiology since my University is the newly established Universities by the Ethiopian government.
In my country, the government is committed in working poverty reduction strategy. Hence, I have strong covenant in participating through the process of making poverty history in the nation. This will be materialized only if I have upgraded my knowledge through further education and work with the community in the grass-root level.
Your institute can thus help me in realizing my dreams. As past my career it also adds knowledge and confidence in my current job that I am currently delivering lectures to Veterinary Physiology to Veterinary Medicine and principles of Animal Physiology to Biology students of the University. Above all, it is a good opportunity to exchange knowledge with colleagues abroad and hence, I can appreciate the knowledge gap and unfulfilled passions that I have. The scholarship also inspires me to exploit untouched potential that was not used due to lack of access to use it and develop into new thinking on the current situation of veterinary physiology in my work area and country at large.
I hope I will be accepted as an applicant and beneficiary of institute of Doctoral Programmes in the animal physiology Scholarship.
