PhD position in Soil Biochemistry (Jena)
December 6, 2007
The biodiversity exploratories initiative (http://www.biodiversity-exploratories.de) is a framework to advance large scale and long term biodiversity research in Germany.
The subproject ‘microbial ecology’ will focus on the relation between microbial activity and carbon storage in soils as affected by land-use intensity and biodiversity. This will be done by analysing the activity of extracellular enzymes (e.g. β-1,4-Glucosidase, β-1,4-Xylosidase and Laccase) in different soil horizons and soil particle size fractions. Additionally, pH, particle size distribution, mineral oxide composition and the radiocarbon age will be studied.
We are now looking for a graduate student interested in both, soil science and microbiology, with motivation to work in the field as well as in the laboratory. Applicants should have an above-average diploma or master degree in biology (ecology, microbiology, biochemistry), geoecology, soil science or a related discipline. Applicants need to work in an integrated environment where chemists, biologists, ecologists and physics work closely together and good English language skills are required.
We offer funding for 3 years with a salary according to TVöD E13/2 (German tariff for public employees).
The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
