PhD Studentship
Mechanics of Materials
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Imperial College is ranked fifth best university in the world
(Times Higher QS World University Rankings 2007).
Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of Mechanics of Materials, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate) provided by a leading aerospace manufacturer.
The project is concerned with the adhesive bonding of composite and metallic structures and their performance assessment and service lifetime prediction. Fracture mechanics principles will be used to assess joint performance and these will be combined with static and fatigue experimental studies in order to predict in-service behaviour. There will be an opportunity to develop finite element modelling skills and close contact with the industrial sponsor will be maintained throughout the project. You will work with a team of highly motivated researchers and benefit from state-of-the-art adhesion facilities within the department.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College. You will have a background in Engineering or the Physical Sciences and will possess an enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. Training will be given in materials characterisation and modelling. You will become a skilled communicator, comfortable in a range of demanding international situations.
