Applied MPhil/PhD

Health Policy and Practice

School of Health and Social Sciences

Full Bursary Available for 2 years with a £12,300 pa stipend

A unique opportunity to investigate an uncharted area of NHS policy has been created through an innovative collaboration between the University of Bolton and Salford Primary Care Trust.

We are offering a 2 year, full time, applied MPhil/PhD studentship with an attractive package of a £12,300 pa stipend, fee waiver and modest funding for research support costs. The bursary will commence in Jan 2008 with an opportunity to bid for funding for the 3rd year.

The bursary is linked to a project focussing on initial research into current commissioner/ provider activities within Salford PCT. The project will lead to the creation of a new model to drive positive changes in commissioner and provider practice whilst providing assurances of quality for the PCT.

The applied nature of this bursary will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise in this relatively new field of corporate and clinical governance in Practice Based Commissioning and to contribute to the academic NHS policy debate. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be well-placed to pursue wider career opportunities in management roles and in positions of influence on Health Policy within either an academic or service context.

The bursary will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to undertake an MPhil/ PhD within the School of Health and Social Sciences, with academic supervision from Professor Carole Truman. The project will be fully supported organisationally by Sue First, a work based learning facilitator who will provide a link across the PCT and the university whilst offering mentorship and guidance throughout the project.

Interested individuals must have a Masters Degree or equivalent research experience and must have a working knowledge of NHS policy and Primary Care.
